Career Exercise 2

Items

As discussed in Career Exercise 1, applying the Strategy Development Process to your own career planning is valuable. The Strategy Development Process consists of:
        · Considering the threats and opportunities in the environment,
        · Considering your own strengths and weaknesses, and
        · Then developing a strategy that matches your strengths with the opportunities, while avoiding the threats and weaknesses.
The purpose of this exercise is for you to develop Internet searching skills so that you may find a career opportunity that truly fulfills your career aspirations.

  1. Visit the homepage of the book, What Color is Your Parachute, located at www.jobhuntersbible.com. This is an important career planning site, because it is frequently updated. Spend at least five minutes exploring this site.

  2. Visit the SJU Career Center Website located from the St. John's website, www.stjohns.edu, by placing mouse over  Current Students item (lower left corner) and then clicking the Career Center link.  Click on Career and Job Search Links.  Spend five minutes exploring a few of the links that most interest you, such as Internships, Part-Time and Summer Jobs and/or Job Search Sites for Graduates.

  3. Follow the instructions received from the Career Center and setup your account on CareerLINK.
                    https://stjohns-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php

  4. Using your most interesting career title from Career Exercise 1, use CareerLINK to determine one job opportunity that truly fulfills your career aspirations. If none of the CareerLINK job opportunities are appropriate, then follow the links on the SJU Career and Job Search Links page or any other webpage until you find a job opportunity that truly fulfills your career aspirations (see a career counselor, if necessary).  Then print one copy of that job opportunity listing.
Click here for sample listing - Capital Markets Intelligence Associate.
Note by PJL: this is the job opportunity I would follow if I were your age now.

  5. Job Opportunity Summary - right click this link and use the SaveTargetAs option to download my Microsoft Word document, IntelAssoc.doc.  It contains the Job Opportunity Summary for the above Capital Markets Intelligence Associate.  Modify this file to create a 50-500 word summary of your job opportunity.  Include the company name, job location, job description, job qualifications, and job responsibilities.  You may copy and paste from the company's webpage.

Requirements

Verbal: Be prepared to discuss the job opportunity that you found on or after the assigned date. Your class participation grade will be penalized 10% if you do not have the Job Opportunity Summary and printout of the job opportunity listing.

Written: Submit printout of the job opportunity listing found in Step 4 above and the Job Opportunity Summary created in Step 5 above.
