Portfolio Exercise 1 -
Establish Stupub Website
- St. John's IT Department has set up the class stupub
accounts. If your name appears on the
Student Stupub Websites webpage, proceed to Step 2. If not, see
me.
- Use Microsoft Windows Explorer to create a folder on
your computer entitled Mgt4322.
- To do this with Windows XP, click Start on the TaskBar, located in the lower left corner of
your screen. Then click MyComputer.
Change the ExplorerBar to Folders by clicking View Menu, ExplorerBar,
Folders.
With Windows Vista, click the Windows button located in the lower left
corner of your screen. Then click Documents.
- Navigate to the folder where you would like to create the Mgt4322
folder.
- Then, click File Menu, New, Folder. Type Mgt4322 for the NewFolder name.
- Put a copy of my port
folder into your newly created Mgt4322 folder. This copy of the
port folder will be the working copy of your website.
- Right click this link and use
SaveTargetAs to download
the port.zip file to your Mgt4322 folder.
Using Microsoft Windows
Explorer, right click the port.zip file, choose ExtractAll, and
place the results in \...\Mgt4322.
To do this, delete
port
at the end of the default location.
Do not
place the results in \...\Mgt4322\port.
This would result in two port folders.
- Delete the port.zip file.
Once the
port folder is on your computer, use Microsoft Word to modify your website homepage, the index.html file,
by changing Joan Q. Student to your name in both locations.
- To do this, open
Microsoft Word, click File Menu, Open.
- Double click folders until you
reach the port folder in your Mgt4322 folder.
- Then, double click index.html. The screen image
below shows an unedited version of index.html
- Put the cursor at the beginning of Joan
Q. Student. Key in your name. Delete Joan Q. Student. Do
this in both places.
Note: Microsoft Word 2007 adds a folder index_files to the
port folder, earlier versions don't.
Either is OK.
Save and exit
Microsoft Word.
If your stupub account
has not been established, proceed to Step 6.b.
If your stupub account
has been established, do Step 5 and proceed to Step 6.a.
Use Microsoft Windows Explorer with
ftp://stupub.stjohns.edu/ to drag and drop
your modified copy of the entire port folder
(not just the index.html file) from your Mgt4322 folder to your stupub website.
- To do this, open Microsoft Windows Explorer (as in Step
2.a above) and key in
ftp://stupub.stjohns.edu/ in the
address bar.
- Enter your Username and password. Your Username for stupub
is the same as for the
computers in the SJU lab.
Example, John Smith,
SSN, 111-11-1234, would
be jsmit234. Your
password is your SJU ID # (PIDM) on front of
the storm card.
- If necessary, change the ExplorerBar to Folders by clicking View
Menu, ExplorerBar, Folders.
- In the ExplorerBar, click on folders until you come
to your Mgt4322 folder. Keep the Mgt4322 folder selected, but use the
downward arrow to show the stupub.stjohns.edu folder, if necessary.
You may right click the stupub.stjohns.edu folder, click properties, and
verify your Username appears in the ftp Location.
Then, in the righthand windowpane, drag and drop the port
folder to the stupub.stjohns.edu folder in the lefthand ExplorerBar.
- If you have problems, close all open applications,
reopen Microsoft Windows Explorer, and redo Steps 5.a-d above.
Use Microsoft Internet Explorer (not MS Word) to print your modified homepage.
- To do this, use the Internet Explorer to print your copy of index.html on stupub
website.
Please make sure that the footer displays the
filename and path, such as
http://stupub.stjohns.edu/dadle988/port/.
I wish to verify that you have copied the port
folder and not just one file to the stupub server.
If the filename and
path are not in the footer, use PageSetup, and set the footer to &u&b&d.
- If
your Stupub account has not been established, then use the Internet
Explorer to print your copy of index.html on your computer.
Please make sure that the footer displays the filename and path, such as
file://C:\MyDocs\M4322\port\index.html.
I wish to verify that you have copied the
port
folder and not just one file to your computer.
If the filename and
path are not in the footer, use PageSetup, and set the footer to &u&b&d.
