Career Exercise 1

Items

When developing a strategy, a business firm:
        · Considers the threats and opportunities in the firm’s environment,
        · Considers the firm’s strengths and weaknesses, and
        · Then develops a strategy that matches the firm’s strengths with the opportunities, while avoiding the threats and weaknesses.
Note by PJL from Mgt 3325 (for your info only): this is called a SWOT Analysis,
                            see Section I.B.2 of http://www.patlyons.com/m3325/chapters/h902.htm.

In a similar fashion, in order for you to start a meaningful and productive career, you should perform the same process on your own individual level. The primary purpose of this exercise is for you to determine your own strengths and weaknesses.

  1. Using the Assessment Booklet distributed by the Career Center, determine your three letter Holland Code by evaluating your enjoyable activities, competencies, and career interests. Record the Holland Code on page 10 of the Assessment Booklet.

  2. Using your personal Self-Directed Search Interpretive Report processed by the Career Center, select at least three realistic career possibilities, that are most appropriate for your present and future higher education degree(s). Record these careers on page 11 of the Assessment Booklet.  If none of these careers are appropriate, then see a career counselor to determine at least one realistic career possibility and two other interesting careers.  Include these on page 11.  Note by PJL: an interesting, but not realistic, career for me is a concrete sculptor.

Requirements

Written: Photocopy your completed pages 10 and 11 of the Assessment Booklet.  Submitted with Homework Set I.  Due date will be announced.
