Homework - Set IV

Items

  1. For Problem 13.5, part a, determine the total inventory carrying and stockout costs (page 553).  Do not do part b.
            Hint: Production rate = (Total demand) / (Number of periods) = 14,200/8 = 1775.
  2. After discussed in class, set up the transportation LP model for Problem 13.13 manually. Use a backordering cost of $40/unit/month. Do not solve. As discussed in class, specify the input data, give the transportation cost table, define the decision variables X i j , objective function and constraints. Be sure to define i and j.
  3. Right Click here and use the Save Target As option to download my Excel worksheet H91313e.xls (53KB).  After discussed in class, use the worksheet to solve Problem 13.13 with backordering cost of $40/unit/month.  Input the data.  Invoke the Solver using the Tools-Solver menu.  Complete the aggregate plan at the bottom of the worksheet.  Print the worksheet.
  4. Determine the job sequence for Problem 15.18 manually with Johnson’s rule (page 635).  Do not illustrate the job sequence graphically.  (Answer: E, D, C, A, B, F.)
  5. Solve Problem 3.6 (page 94) manually with the additional Precedent Relationship that F requires both C and D. This relationship is added so that there is at least one activity for which the LF is determined by more than one immediately succeeding activity.  Determine the ES, EF, LS, LF and slack time for each activity (EF of G = 29). Determine the critical path  (Answer: B, D, F, G.).
  6. Solve Problem D.13 (page 777) as modified. The initial text of the problem remains unchanged, except that the customer time cost = $25/hr for customer time spent waiting and in service. For homework, replace the three questions in the text with the following.
    1. What is the average time that catalogue customers spend waiting and in service?  (Ws = 0.333 hr)
    2. What is the average number of callers waiting and in service?  (Ls = 4.0)
    3. The department store is considering buying a computerized system to assist the clerk that will reduce the average time the clerk takes to 2 minutes per order. The system would cost $30/day. Each day is 8 hours long. Should the store buy the computerized system? Explain.  (Total cost without computer = $880.00, with computer $243.33)
  7. For the Ch 12, 13, 14, or 15 CPAI, modify the ClassPartAICh121314or15.doc file.  Click here for details.
  8. Submit separately (see calendar) the one page summary of the Self Assessment exercise, and one copy of your updated resume.  Click here for details.

Requirements
Individual Items: Be prepared to present your solution any class after the homework Item is assigned. For computerized problems, bring solution printout and flash drive to demo solution on the PC to the class.   Same Requirements as HW I.  Click for details.

Entire Homework Set: This problem set is to be complete and professional looking. As a result, your solutions must show all work, not just the answer. An additional cover or binding is not required, but the homework set is to be stapled (not paper clipped) together as one unit in sequential order. If not, penalty is 10%. No photocopies. Each student is to submit their own work. Do not include the Homework Set IV Requirements Sheet.  An additional 20% may be deducted for sloppiness and/or poor English.  Any problem solved as a modification to one of my Excel worksheets is to have the text, <Your name>, replaced with your actual name in the title. If not, penalty is 10% for each problem. Do not submit any of the cover pages from the micro lab printers (save the trees). The penalty is 10% for each cover page submitted.

Submission after the final exam receives zero credit. A sample of the problems will be used for grading. Submit in class. Do not leave in my mailbox, because it is not secure.
