Ch 16 - Just-in-Time Systems

  1. Just-in-Time Systems         (p642)

    1. Def - Just-in-Time (JIT) - an overall philosophy of continuous and forced problem solving that drives out waste by using pull systems. (p642)
    2. *Def - Pull System - a production system that pulls a component to where it is needed just as it is needed. (As opposed to a push system that pushes components into downstream workstations regardless of need.)
    3. Impact of JIT on:
      1. Employees
        1. *Cross-trained  (p656)
        2. *Empowered to stop production
        3. *Fewer job classifications to ensure flexibility of employees
      2. Suppliers - develop partnerships that:
        1. *Reduce unnecessary activities - less incoming inspection (p645)
        2. *Reduce in-transit inventory
        3. *Improve supplier quality and reliability
      3. Production
        1. *Reduced setup times and costs  (Fig 16.6, p651)
        2. *Reduced production lot sizes  (p649)
        3. *Reduced space for work-in-process inventory  (p647)
        4. *Increased flexibility of layouts  (p647)

  2. Ethics (Not explicitly in Heizer, but appropriate to include at end of Mgt 3325)
    1. Def: Ethics - the study of standards of conduct based on respect for others.
(Boils down to: take the action that is best for the long term, not the short term.)
    2. Opinion of PJL: developing high ethical standards is facilitated by belief in God.
    3. For your own professional development, spend some serious time thinking about the existence of God.

    4. Do business professionals really believe in God?
      1. Dr. Schaefer's lecture, "Science and Christianity: Conflict or Coherence?".
        1. Scientists appear to have the same range of attitudes about religious matters as does the general public.
        2. A poll conducted by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, found that 43% of Ph.D. scientists are in church on a typical Sunday. In the (general) American public, 44% are in church on a typical Sunday.
    5. Three important questions:
      1. Was Jesus Christ divine?
      2. Is there an after life?
      3. Is there a God?
Interesting book - The Five People You'll Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom.  A recent
#1 New York Times bestseller.  Over 3 million copies in print. Website -  http://www.albomfivepeople.com/.  I read this book in one day.  The first time in my life that I've read a book in one day.
    6. Opinion of PJL: even if the answer to all three of the above questions is no, it makes sense for me to be a Christian.
    7. Fractals - complex graphs created by relatively simple mathematical algorithms.  Click here for more info.  (For me, fractals are another proof of the existence of God.)
