Homework - Set I

Items

  1. Read Problem B.7 (page 727).  Assume that we know that 240 hours of wiring and 140 hours of drilling will be used.  Set up the equations to determine the number of air conditioners and fans that will be produced.  Do not solve.

  2. Set up the linear programming (LP) model for Problem B.7 (page 727) manually. Do not solve. The LP model must be hand-written.

  3. After discussed in class, right click here and use the Save Target As option to download my Excel worksheet, H9B07e.xls.  Save it on your H: drive here at SJU or on your hard drive at home.  Use it to solve Problem B.7.

  4. Right click here and use the Save Target As option to download my Excel worksheet, H906s09e.xls (31KB). Save it on your H: drive here at SJU or on your hard drive at home.  Use it to solve Problem S6.9 (page 245) as modified below.  The initial text of the problem as given remains unchanged.  Use mean( X ) = 6.1, R   = 1.0,  n = 4.  Use Table S6.1 page 227 to determine A2 , D3 , and D4 .
Replace the question in the text with the following.
            a. What are the upper and lower control limits for the process mean? (Input the correct formula in the worksheet.)
            b. What are the upper and lower control limits for the process range? (Input the correct formula in the worksheet.)
            c. Plot the control chart for the process mean. Is the process mean in control? Explain.
            d. Create the plot for the process range control chart. Is the process range in control? Explain.

  5. Create a Process Chart for Problem 7.2d (p282) using the case given below, with five columns of chart symbols, process description column, and no "Distance in Feet" or "Time in Minutes" columns:

    1. Former student drives to bank.

    2. He requests $5000 loan and offers his Rolls-Royce as collateral.

    3. Banker inspects Rolls-Royce.

    4. Student receives loan.

    5. Rolls-Royce is driven to bank parking lot for storage.

    6. Student goes on one month business trip.

    7. Student returns and pays off loan.

  6. For the Ch 5 or 6 CPAI, modify the ClassPartAICh5or6.doc file.  Click here for details.

  7. Submit a photocopy of your completed pages 10 and 11 of the Assessment Booklet.  Click here for details.

Requirements
Individual Items:
Be prepared to present your solution any class after the homework Item is assigned. For computerized problems, bring solution printout and flash drive to demo solution on the PC to the class.

At the professor's discretion, the class may be requested to submit their solutions during the first 2:00 minutes of class.  After review by professor, students will volunteer, and one will be selected for presentation

Your grade for the Presentation of Homework Exercises is based on having an honest written attempt at the solution and volunteering to present.  For each problem that you are not appropriately prepared and you do not volunteer, your grade is reduced by 10%.

(You may think of these Homework Exercises as take-home quizzes.)

Entire Homework Set: This problem set is to be complete and professional looking. As a result, your solutions must show all work, not just the answer. An additional cover or binding is not required nor desired, but the problem set is to be stapled (not paper clipped) together as one unit in sequential order. If not, penalty is 10%. No photocopies. Each student is to submit their own work (If not, grade on homework is zero).  An additional 20% may be deducted for sloppiness and/or poor English.

Late submission penalty is 20% for each class late. Submission after the final exam receives zero credit. A sample of the problems will be used for grading. Submit in class. Do not leave in my mailbox, because it is not secure.
